We believe that each child is unique in his or her interests, abilities and needs. Education should be as unique as the student. At Barrie Montessori School, we respect each child as an individual person and learner. Our teachers provide an environment that fosters: students’ abilities to think for themselves, guides them to a love of learning and encourages them to explore all possibilities. Above all, Barrie Montessori nurtures each child to encourage compassion, respect, and independence of thought.

Children enjoy learning together in an atmosphere of warmth, safety, kindness and mutual respect. Our classroom environments provide a wide variety of materials and experiences appropriate to a range of intellectual, emotional, and physical developmental levels. By learning in mixed-age groups (3-6 year olds), our students can focus on their individual progress, not the progress of their classmates. Students who have mastered work are encouraged to advance to new challenges beyond a standard curriculum. Our teachers guide the learning by building on each child’s strengths and personality. The classroom offers the responsibility of freedom by promoting gratifying, meaningful work choices.

Small groups and individual instruction characterize the Casa classroom. Teachers move throughout the classroom, facilitating children’s work choices and social interactions as they carefully observe and record the key points of each child’s day. Open-ended work periods encourage children to develop concentration, to make choices on their own, and to learn to manage portions of their time independently. By working in small groups, children are also encouraged to develop their academic skills and collaboration abilities.

“These words reveal the child’s inner needs; ‘Help me to do it my self’.” Maria Montessori
