The JK/SK Program: A Meaningful Montessori Kindergarten Experience

Recognizing the importance of early development, we have created a program that stimulates academic learning, enhances social skills and develops character, self-respect and confidence.

Our JK/SK program offers a warm, engaging, and thoughtfully prepared Montessori environment where children grow academically, socially, and emotionally through purposeful, hands-on experiences. Rooted in the Montessori philosophy, our Kindergarten experience is designed to nurture the whole child—supporting independence, confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Small group and individual instruction are central to the JK/SK experience. Children are guided through a rich curriculum that includes practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics, and culture. Each area features developmentally appropriate, tactile materials that make learning concrete and meaningful. Grace and courtesy are embedded into daily routines, helping children develop kindness, empathy, and respectful communication with peers and adults alike.

Our classrooms are carefully and intentionally prepared to offer an abundance of learning opportunities, tailored to a wide range of intellectual, emotional, and physical developmental needs. The hands-on Montessori materials spark curiosity and invite exploration, while helping students build strong, foundational skills in all subject areas. Children are encouraged to follow their interests and learn at their own pace, cultivating focus, motivation, and a strong sense of autonomy.

Teachers move purposefully throughout the classroom, observing each child’s progress and thoughtfully guiding their choices. They support social interactions, facilitate academic work, and document key learning moments, ensuring each child is supported in a meaningful and individualized way. Long, uninterrupted work periods allow children to engage deeply, develop concentration, and manage their time independently.

In our mixed-age setting, students benefit from learning in a community that values both individual growth and shared experience. Younger children are inspired by older peers, while older students build leadership and confidence by modeling and mentoring. Rather than being limited by a one-size-fits-all curriculum, children who have mastered concepts are encouraged to move on to new, more challenging work.

The Kindergarten experience at Barrie Montessori & Elementary Private School builds not just academic readiness, but capable, curious, and confident learners—children who are grounded in who they are and excited for what comes next.
